Dustin Martin Says He’ll Play for Albury Tigers in 2027

Could Dustin Martin be pulling on the yellow and black again in 2027?

The Richmond legend has made a huge statement while appearing at an Albury Tigers luncheon, telling the crowd that he intends to play for the club next year.

Speaking about visiting the Albury Sports Ground, Martin said:

“Milesy took me down to the sportsground this morning and I told him I’ll play there next year, believe me.”

While there has not yet been an official announcement confirming Martin as an Albury Tigers player for 2027, those words will certainly have local footy fans talking.

Martin's appearance at Albury was already a major event for the club. The Border Mail reported ahead of the function that securing the normally private Richmond champion as a guest speaker represented a significant coup for Albury.

The Albury Tigers compete in the Ovens & Murray Football Netball League and call the Albury Sports Ground home. The club celebrated its 150th anniversary during the 2026 season.

Adding one of the biggest names in modern Australian football to that history would be enormous for the club and the wider competition.

Could Dustin Martin Really Play for Albury in 2027?

For now, Martin's comments should be treated as exactly that: a statement made by Martin at the Albury Tigers luncheon, rather than confirmation of a completed signing.

But the prospect isn't as far fetched as it might once have sounded.

Martin retired from the AFL in 2024 after 302 games for Richmond. His career included three AFL premierships, the 2017 Brownlow Medal and an extraordinary three Norm Smith Medals.

He has also remained involved with football since his AFL retirement, including returning to Richmond in 2026 to speak with and mentor the club's playing group.

If Martin does line up for Albury in 2027, it would create enormous interest around regional football.

A Richmond champion wearing another Tigers jumper is a story in itself.

But having a player with Martin's record running around in the Ovens & Murray Football Netball League would likely attract significant attention to Albury and its opponents whenever he played.

For local footy supporters, there would also be something pretty special about being able to stand around the boundary and watch one of the most decorated players of the AFL era playing country footy.

For now, we'll have to wait and see whether Dusty's comments become reality.

But he certainly couldn't have been much clearer:

“I’ll play there next year, believe me.”
